Our second eyesore for the year 2007 was long overdue. It is none other than the First Citizens Bank building, at the North-East corner of the intersection between Fayetteville and Martin Streets. Looking at this low-rise makes it impossible to forget the architecturally inferior design (nothing against the architect), not to mention the lack of windows right on the main street side. The street level experience is what saves this structure.

What makes this building a disaster is the fact it replaced a gorgeous midrise, which was both taller and architecturally far more attractive (see photo below; courtesy of Emporis.com). Unfortunately, Raleigh lost some of its most impressive buildings to the lack of vision and elegance. Several monstrosities polluted the otherwise attractive downtown area of Raleigh. Let's hope that this will not happen again.
